Psalm 1:2 — Delighting in God’s Word " But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night." --

Psalm 1:2 This week, during family devotions, we spent time reflecting on what it means to delight in the law of the Lord.

But what exactly does that phrase mean? Is it referring to the Ten Commandments? The ceremonial laws given to Israel? Or something broader?   I believe the “law” here points to the Word of God itself—the Scriptures that reveal His will and His ways.

Charles Spurgeon captured this beautifully when he wrote: “He is not under constraint, but finds his highest joy in the law of the Lord.” In other words, the blessed person doesn’t approach Scripture as a burden or mere duty, but as a source of joy. True godliness flows from love, not compulsion.

Meditation Day and Night Notice that Psalm 1:2 doesn’t stop at delight—it adds meditation. To meditate is to turn God’s Word over in your mind, to let it shape your thoughts and decisions. When life presses in, when choices must be made, when questions arise, meditation on Scripture provides wisdom and direction.

This isn’t a casual glance at a verse now and then. It’s a continual engagement—day and night—so that God’s Word becomes the framework of our lives. Our walk, our stance, and even our rest should be rooted in His law.

Living in the Word Psalm 1 paints a picture of a life saturated with Scripture. To delight in God’s Word is to love it deeply. To meditate on it is to let it guide every step. Together, delight and meditation form the rhythm of a blessed life—one that stands firm, bears fruit, and prospers in God’s ways.

The C.H. Spurgeon quotes came from The Treasury of David on Psalm 1:2:
